A smattering of thoughts.

Yes, I did say smattering.

(is that even a word. Wait. Don’t answer that. I kinda like it, even if it isn’t!)

I feel like I don’t have a heck of a lot to say on one given topic right now, but I have enough to say to toss some up here. Take it or leave it ; -)

I was driving home from the studio last night (talk about diving right back into teaching after almost two weeks of travel and not many classes taught or taken in between – total withdrawal – teaching 3 classes yesterday, wheeeee! end side note) and I flipped on ‘Ave Maria’ – the Beyonce remake of that song and wow, the words struck me. I found myself thinking ‘wouldn’t that song be perfect when we get married?’

And then I listened to another of my all-time favorites ‘You are the Best Thing’ by Ray LaMontagne and thought ‘swoon…this is *exactly* how I feel about M. *This* should be ‘our’ song’ shouldn’t it?ย

(like how I completely bypass any other details about said marriage/wedding? doing this ‘my way’ after all…)

I am *totally* embracing being home and in my own routine, with my own food, my own choices, everything. Talk about appreciating more and more my ability to work from home, huh? As much as traveling for work has really expanded my horizons and my confidence, it’s also much more taxing than it may look from the outside looking in. At least I always find it that way. If anyone knows the secret to traveling and not being bone-tired after, please share ๐Ÿ˜‰

And, after my last trip, I was inspired to put together some of my bigger a-ha moments when it comes to travel and balancing your food choices for the ladies of barre n9ne studio. Check out my guest post on it (I was going to cross-post it here, but figure you can swing on over and take a peek if you are interested!).

For the first year in many, I feel as though the holidays won’t go screaming past me in a blur. While I have a lot of back to back family gatherings next weekend leading into Christmas, I purposely did not overbook weekends leading into it (this past planless weekend? GENIUS.) and I feel ready and excited for the holidays!

AND M and I are hosting Christmas DAY this year at our apartment and I couldn’t be more excited about that (good thing we started new holiday traditions huh?). We’re hosting my sisters (I think both of them can come, but as a matter of fact, that may not be true, BUT I will see them both the days leading into Christmas too – score!), my mom and my grandparents ย for lunch and another genius move on my part? I’ve decided to make a brunch menu since I think everyone will be nearing ‘food fatigue’ where one big meal too many will cause ‘sick of food-itis’ which ALWAYS happens to me after the holidays. It’s not about overindulging, just about wanting a simple meal vs. a roast, a turkey, a ham, etc. Ya know? (or is it just me?!). Pinterest will be my consultant for all things brunch. Got any good ideas? I’d love to hear them (and pin them!).

Anyhoo, that’s all I got. (and, like so many others, I am silently honoring the victims in the CT shootings…at least here on my blog, but will be keeping top of mind to ‘pay it forward’ as much as possible this holiday season, and always.)

  1. Ha, I love the word smattering…even if it might not be a real word, I’m totally hoping it is ๐Ÿ˜‰

I am SO excited for the holidays this year and for very much the same reasons — they WON’T fly by this time and I’ll enjoy the sh*t out of them with those I love MOST of all on this earth. I’m even more excited about Christmas because you get to host and I just find hosting a holiday to be such a fun experience and the fact that you and M can experience it together makes it that much better. Christmas feels even more special this year for some reason, doesn’t it? Or maybe its just our perspective has shifted and that feeling of gratitude has crept in more than ever, hm? ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Smattering is a good word, huh?

I think the holidays are going to kick butt!! We have so much fun planned and a little bit of a different year, with our hosting and stuff and I LOVE that. I think perspective also has something to do with it yes ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Smattering is one of my favorite words to use! And I am incredibly jealous that you’re hosting Christmas haha…must consider that next year, although putting my fam and the boy’s in our apartment might be way too much…something to think about! And I LOVE the brunch idea! Who doesn’t love breakfast and lunch food at the same time on one of the best days of the year? I hope it goes sooo well for you ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Smattering is awesome, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰
I am SO excited to host!! It feels like a lot of pressure, and then to wing it with a brunch menu, but I say go big or go home right?! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. We always host Christmas at our house, but my mom brings all the food. Lol.
I’ve always tried to talk them into having brunch, but they are set in their ways! It’s fine, though, as much as I love food, that’s not what Christmas is all about. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I am adopting the word ‘smatterings’. From here on out it shall be in my vocab rotation ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, the wedding song! As an avid music lover and enthusiast, I found lots of joy coming up with the ‘soundtrack’ to my big day. Using music and lyrics that move your soul will make the day more special and your memories more bright when you hear that special song AFTER the Big Day. I went the non-traditional route and walked down the aisle to “First Day of My Life” by Bright Eyes. Now every time I hear that song I am brought RIGHT back to that moment of walking toward my groom. The joy I felt at that moment HUGE!

And Ray LaMontagne…his voice puts the boom, boom in my heart. *Sigh* One of my favs for sure.

    1. Add it to your vocab for sure!! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I looooove music and lyrics and stuff, and what the songs conjure up for memories. isn’t that the best? Ray LaMontagne…legit, a heart thumper. His voice is so gravely! LOVE IT. Have you heard his version of ‘Jolene?’ I feel weird loving that song but I really do ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. Just saw your barre n9ne classes on Living Social. I almost bought them even though I live close to an hour from there after reading your blog and hearing your passion for barre n9ne. I really want to try it one day.

      1. Someone I read had you in their blog roll and then I started reading and have been enjoying your blog. I love your positive thinking and gratefulness.

  6. Smattering is totally a read word! I love that you and M are hosting Christmas and that you are embracing the holidays and not overbooking yourself. Love it. I’m excited to slow down and enjoy the season!

  7. Thank you for all of your advice on working from home! I did work travel for a straight year and I unfortunately have no tips for you. Personally I always thought it sounded so glamorous but really, it’s overrated (IMO). Anyhoo, good luck with the Christmas Day plans – sounds like it will be a grand time!

    1. Anytime!!! And you are right, work travel is pretty overrated since half the time, you really don’t get to see much of anything but conference rooms, sadly. It has been really good for me, in terms of growth, and learning, but it is VERY tiring! Especially cross country! Have a great holiday!!
